Mawkhar Christian Higher Secondary School, is one of the oldest school in the state of Meghalaya. It is situated in the heart of the state capital, Mawkhar Shillong, East Khasi Hills District. The School was established in the year 1891 and was known as Welsh Mission Middle English school In 1947, Welsh Mission Middle English school was proceeded to high school and named as Mawkhar Christian High School. It was in the year 1951 that Mawkhar Christian high school students appeared the Matriculation (which was at that time under the Gauhati University). Mawkhar Christian High school was under the aegis of the K.J.P. Synod, the school outshined itself since its inception, it had been raised to a secondary status in 1947 and came to be known as Mawkhar Christian Secondary School, And to Higher Secondary School level in the year 2011, presently known as Mawkhar Christian Higher Secondary School and prepare students for the S.S.L.C & H.S.S.L.C Examination in Arts stream, under the Meghalaya Board of School Education, Tura. In 2016 the school also set up the Lower Primary Section (English Medium) and at present the School runs Classes right from Pre-Nursery to Class- XII and Since 2018 the school is totally a Co-educational institution. The school has a Managing Committee constituted by the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi headed by its President and other committee members pertaining to the welfare of the school. It is indeed a great privilege that our school Mawkhar Christian Higher Secondary School has reached 125 years of its service to the people of the State. Therefore, to commemorate this achievement a Quasquicentennial Jubilee Celebration was held on the 4th October 2016. The programme was indeed a grand success where the students of the school both past and present attended the function owing their gratitude to their Alma-meter. We should all be reminded of the historic moment of the school when Mr. Wilson Reade stepped down as the last Headmaster of the Welsh Mission Middle English School only to be named the first Headmaster of Mawkhar Christian High School 1947.
